Name: Alex Jacob

Age: 25 (2009)

Country: USA (Texas)

Alex Jacob’s story reads something like a fairytale: the kid could have done anything. Brilliant and charismatic, almost any career would have opened its door to him. Instead, he decided to become a pro poker player – and has done exceedingly well out of it. Keep your eye on Alex Jacob: he’s one of poker’s rising stars.

Jacobs is young – born in 1984, he is only 25 – yet he’s achieved more in his short pro poker career than most players will achieve in a lifetime. What’s more, he is consistently good. Jacobs is no one-tournament wonder, he grinds hard and keeps going, and as a result he regularly either wins tournaments or places squarely on the final table.

How he Got Started

His interest in poker began early. He started out playing small poker games with his friends while he was still in high school, but began to play with more conviction when he reached college – he went to Yale. There he achieved degrees in economics and mathematics, and honed his poker skills playing $1 blind No Limit Hold’em games at the Trumbull College poker club.

His first blip on the radar of Poker came in 2003. In that year, he took down the Peter A. Fabrizio Memorial Poker Classic, hosted at Yale every year. At about this time, he also began playing online, since no casino in the USA would allow him to set foot inside their doors yet.

However, other countries have different age limits, and Jacob began to travel extensively in order to play live tournaments at casinos around the world. He entered games in the Bahamas, Monte Carlo, Paris and Vienna, although he had no major tournament wins at that time.

2005 World Poker Tour

However, all that changed in 2005 when he burst into the limelight at the World Poker Tour’s (WPT) World Poker Finals. He clocked out in 27th place with a cash of $27,600. From here, the only place to go was up.

The mainstream poker media began to take notice of young Alex Jacob in 2006 when he entered the WPT Foxwoods Poker Classic. The event is $10,000 buy in tournament, and after outlasting a field of hundreds, Jacob went heads up with Victor Ramdin for the top prize. He didn’t make it, but at only 22 years old, a second-place cash of $655,507 can hardly be sniffed at.

This second position finish seemed to trigger an avalanche of wins for Jacob. During the rest of that year, his tournament earnings totalled almost $1.7 million. He cashed in two further WPT tournaments, and did incredibly well at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) where he reached two final tables, and cashed in four events.

Throughout 2007 and 2008, he continued to cash at WPT events. He continued to chase a WSOP win that still eludes him, but he can add a third place finish in the 2007 WSOP Event 3 with a cash of $282,367 to his credit.

Alex Jacob’s trademark is his massive afro, which has earned him the nickname Mr Fro Poker. He also goes by the name Yahtzem. He attributes his ongoing success to the support he receives from his fiancée and family.
