ESPN.com, the worldwide media source that covers every kind of sports, started coming out with a list of the top ten poker players in the world back in December. This list is released on a monthly basis and was created to put some kind of order in an area that is sometimes a cause of confusion.

The list is called The Nuts and is compiled by a professional group of sports fans who regularly follow poker and examine the top players and how they are performing in the industry. The panel includes top contributors to ESPN’s poker board, including Gary Wise, Bernard Lee, Bluff Editor in Chief Lance Bradley, Bluff writer Jessica Walman, tournament reporter Don Peters and Poker News editor Matthew Parvis.

This month’s list was posted as follows:

  • Phil Ivey
    Jason Mercier
    Tom Dwan
    Daniel Negreanu
    Patrick Antonius
    Yeveniy Timoshenko
    Daniel Alaei
    Eric Baldwin
    Cole South
    Scott Seiver
  • When ESPN first started the list in December, Mercier occupied sixth place. However, his performance in WSOPE was so impressive that the panel sat up to take notice and this month, the young player found himself in the second spot.

“It’s pretty cool to be number 2,” he said. “I think that I’ve reached as high as I can go. I don’t think I have any chance of beating out Ivey.”
Scott Sevier, in the number ten spot, reached the list after he caught the panel’s attention for a good run of victories over the past couple of months. He had two six-figure scores in a week and his last three cashes have been over $200K.

The ESPN list said goodbye to Betrand Grospellier, despite his impressive 13th finish in the Euro Finals of Poker. It seems that fresh talent is only a poker round away and with the likes of Seiver and Mercier on the scene, top players will need to work harder to keep their spots on the list.

What is pushing poker sites such as Sportsbook Poker and PlayersOnly to move from the Cake Poker Network to the fledgling Merge Gaming Poker Network?

While these two sites are scheduled to join the Merge network next month, the latest news to come out of the industry is that the two year old Lock Poker site has also announced its intentions to migrate.

It goes without saying that the addition of three poker rooms will do much to bolster the traffic at Merge, which has been suffering a decline in players in the past half a year or so.

Cake Poker, however, has actually seen an increase in traffic, so it is interesting to see whether the departure of three poker rooms will directly impact the traffic on both platforms.

By moving to the Merge network, Lock Poker will continue to offer its games and services to US poker players. The founder and Chief Executive Officer of Lock, Jennifer Larson explained why she had chosen Merge as the optimal platform to migrate to.

“They are aggressive, innovative and very progressive in design and development,” she said. “They are also dedicated to allowing their partners to be authentic which is integral to the success of a network in the long-term.”

The Merge network will certainly benefit from the addition of such as a high profile site such as Lock Poker, which hosted the Bluff Online Poker Challenge.

The site carries a contingency of Lock Pros such as Eric “Rizen” Lynch who contributes to Bluff and is also the VP of Product Development at Lock Poker. “I am very excited about the move to the Merge network and I will be working closely with them to further innovate Lock’s product,” he said.

“We are thrilled to be working with such an innovative and experienced marketing group,” said the Chief Executive Officer of the network, Anthony Taylor. “This deal will bring even more liquidity to the network and aid our continued growth.”

Poker fans looking for live poker action got more than they bargained for when they attended the European Poker Tournament event in Berlin this weekend. The poker tournament was the scene of an armed robbery, already dubbed the Berlin Poker Robbery, where $1 million was stolen from under the very noses of the organizers.

The EPT Berlin leg was being held in the Grand Hyatt Hotel on Saturday attracted nearly 1000 players who flocked to the European city to enter the 5 day tournament.

According to eye witnesses, at around 2.15 pm on Saturday, a mask gang burst into the hotel and prompted panic after they threatened security staff.

A police spokesperson said: “Several masked, armed individuals entered the Grand Hyatt and fled with a haul of money.”

While no specific sums were given, it generally believed that the gang headed to the $1 million being offered as prize pool in the competition. Staff were ordered to hand over the money under threat by the gang who wielded hand guns and a machete.

Chaotic scenes during the gang’s raid were broadcast live on TV as the poker tournament is considered a popular live poker event. Viewers saw their poker heroes hiding under tables and attempting to escape the gang, with furniture being overturned and heightened sense of panic in the ten minutes of the raid.

An earlier report said that the robbers had got away with the entire prize pool, however it was later reported that due to being tackled “very bravely” by a security guard, the group lost a bag that contained a significant amount of the money. Most of the prize, therefore, was left behind by the robbers.

Among the popular celebrities due to take place in the poker tournament was Boris Becker, who was eliminated before the robbery took place.

Due to the panic that ensued and the scuffles that took place, several people were lightly injured in the raid.
